Manipulative positioning of Gyrodactylus colemanensis on individually isolated fry of Salmo gairdneri was used to examine the behavior of the parasite during colonization and the influence that site of invasion has on size and spatial distribution of ensuing infrapopulations. The parasite's initial response was to relocate posteriorly on the host's body; those that reached a fin usually end up on or adjacent to the fin's margin. Individuals monitored for up to 15 days postinfection moved both anteriorly and posteriorly on the body surface and relocated to new fins via the body surface. The parasite occurred most frequently on the caudal fin followed by the pectoral and pelvic fins, with length of the fin margin and fin activity appearing to be factors influencing the distribution. Infections originating from the head, flank, and caudal fin similarly rose and fell to extinction or near extinction on the host over 49 days at 10 C. The more posterior the site of invasion, the greater the proportion of parasites carried by the caudal fin. The study concludes that G. colemanensis is restricted in its distribution on the host and that the fin margins may serve as a reliable food source and favor transmission to new hosts.  相似文献

In Otago shelf waters surface swarms of krill (Nyctiphanes australis),hyperiid amphipods (Parathemisto spp.) and galatheid crab larvae(Munida gregaria) provide an abundant summer food source forplanktivores. We tested the hypothesis that aggregation of avianplanktivores depends upon the spatial distribution of theirprey. Gulls (Larus scopulinus, L.bulleri, L.dominicanus), sootyshearwaters (Puffinus griseus) and white-fronted terns (Sternastriata) showed significantly aggregated distributions. Thedistribution of birds sitting on the sea surface was correlatedwith the abundance pattern of krill but was not correlated withthe distribution of smaller hyperiid amphipods. The distributionof flying red-billed gulls (L.scopulinus), black-billed gulls(L.bulleri) and sooty shearwaters was correlated with the krilldistribution but black-backed gulls (L.dominicanus) were not.Stomach contents of black-billed gulls were dominated by krill,in contrast to sooty shearwaters, which ate a higher proportionof Minida, and black-backed gulls, which contained Munida andfish. No amphipods were found in bird stomachs. There was nosignificant correlation between bird distributions and the hydrographicregime, water depth or distance offshore. The distribution ofprey rather than hydrographic regime was a more important determinantof bird distributions at this spatial scale (2.6–12 km)and location.  相似文献

Middle Eocene, non-marine sediments from southern England contain examples of Teredolites borings in two contrasting palaeoenvironmental settings, viz.: (A) as in situ borings in an allochthonous lignite in an abandoned river channel and (B) as bored logs in cross-bedded fluvial sandstones of probable point-bar origin. The lignite is 0.30 m thick, of which the upper 0.20 m is intensely bored. Rounded pebbles of ?charcoal at its base also show small borings. A log in a fluvial sandstone shows densely-packed. radial club-shaped borings. now filled with sandstone. The wood substrate has subsequently been oxidized away. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed account of Teredolites from an ancient freshwater setting.  相似文献
